Each week, Curious Canberra tackles a question from you, the audience. This week’s query is from Gillian King, who wanted to know more about Canberra’s Aboriginal history. Gillian has lived in Canberra for a number of years and through her work as a sustainability facilitator, has met many people from the Aboriginal community. She was aware that there is more than one group of Aboriginal people in Canberra who want their connection to the land formally recognised — including the Ngunnawal people or Ngunawal, as it is spelt by some , the Ngambri and the Ngarigu.
Gillian wanted to understand why people in Canberra primarily acknowledged the Ngunnawal people as the traditional landowners, when other groups sought recognition. Gillian wanted to know three things: What is the Aboriginal history of Canberra? What are the tribal boundaries and why is there confusion? And what are the significant sites? Then there’s Shane Mortimer’s group the Ngambri-Guumaal that has connections across the Snowy Mountains all the way down to the Blue Mountains and they have a connection across the Canberra area.
And then there’s the Ngunnawal who say they are actually from this area. Ms Goreng Goreng said in the ACT, and around the country, many Aboriginal people were forcibly removed from their land by the Government in the s. She said the shockwaves caused by Government assimilation policies were still be being felt today, and confusion and disputes about traditional ownership were a consequence.

NRMA driver training school in Canberra focuses on low risk driving techniques to assist students to become safer drivers for life and not to just pass their driving test. We appoint only the highest quality driving instructors, each chosen not only for their skills as professional educators but for their enormous passion for what they do. Regular re-training programs ensure that all NRMA driving instructors are fully abreast of changes in industry practice and modern education techniques.
We offer driving lessons in the Canberra, Belconnen and Macquarie areas for students at any stage of the drivers’ license process – any age and any level of driving ability. Lesson length varies from 60 minutes to 3 hours depending on individual needs, with a 90 minute ongoing driving lesson highly recommended. A requirement for learner drivers who have not previously had a lesson with an NRMA instructor. The 90 minute lesson is designed to allow appropriate time to determine the student’s knowledge, current skill and confidence level so a tailored program can be developed to suit their needs.
Suitable for Canberra customers who hold an ACT learner logbook. Choose from initial lesson right through to the final drive or simply pick up part way through when required. During this lesson the instructor will assess the student’s skill level and tailor the lesson based on their individual competency needs. In additional, if the supervising driver is available the instructor will take the time to build rapport and explain our progress card and the NRMA competency rating system.
This assists the supervising driver to keep track of the learner’s progress and work alongside the instructor to gain best results.
